  •  36 000 years ago, only a few thousands men lived on our planet. Among those, some had already chosen our land. A temperate climate, water quantity... but beyond adequate physical conditions, the presence of the Pont d'Arc, majestic and mysterious arch, probably contributed to the choice of our ancestors to use their cave as one of the first places for living, meetings, art and culture.

On December 18, 1994, with great emotion that the inventors of the painted cave of Pont d'Arc, Jean-Marie Chauvet and his team discovered the intact remains of this life paintings of a variety of an artistic quality, seniority - yet a fresh - never met before; here a bear skull placed on a rock. Here the remains of a fire seeming to await the return of the inhabitants, the most varied bestiary and many of the world: 14 425 representations of animals, most dangerous, which is exceptional, but also human figures, hands and positive negative pelvic shapes, prints, using the shape of the rock ... the Chauvet cave, declared World Heritage by UNESCO since June 22, 2014, is a treasure of humanity.
And this treasure, we will have the privilege to visit from April 25, 2015, in the most ambitious ever made restitution site: everything will be reproduced exactly and scale 1 concretions to works art, through the darkness, humidity, sound atmosphere and temperature. The visit will be made on a gateway and will be punctuated by 10 stop stations and observation. The input of the facsimile will be theatrical and mysterious. The five senses will be stimulated visitors: freshness, humidity, silence, darkness olfactory sensations but also contribute to immerse the audience in the reconstituted cave. This choice will put the visitor in the physical conditions close to those existing in the original cave. At the end of the reply, the questions that will be asked visitors find their answer in the Discovery Center and its permanent exhibit Aurignacians, their environment and especially the wall art.

Fauna of rivers, sources and banks in the Natural Reserve of the Ardèche's Gorges

There are many fish: barbel, gudgeon, chub, barbel, carp, perch, pike, roach, Mediterranean barbel, feigned Rhone shad or eel.
Reptiles, mainly lizards, but the viper snake able to stay long minutes underwater to hunt fish. It is harmless to humans
There are also kingfishers, dippers, wagtails, the great cormorant or heron. But the most majestic of our birds is probably the Bonelli's eagle, many couples have taken up residence in the Gorge.
Some mammals also live to rivers such as the beaver who has always lived in the gorges of Ardeche, accommodating to the strong current and cliffs by installing his family in the crevices of rocky shores, so it became troglodyte. The otter frequent the Gorge recently.

Flore

Flora of the gorges is the northernmost fringe of Mediterranean landscapes. There we find, within a large forest, species that have adapted to long periods of drought and limestone ground. They are here, often the limit of their range. Moreover, at the beginning of the century, logging performed every 20-30 years as well as the intense agricultural activity on the tableland have promoted a mosaic of plants of over 500 species.
In scrubland , we can found  green oak, elm, ash, Phoenician juniper, privet and the inevitable chestnut!
While on the banks of the river, there are white or purple willows and poplars and maples.

Among the plants include the horned poppy, oriental cocklebur, sarsaparilla, dogwood, the Orlaya and Himalayan balsam is an invasive species.

We can also find the Arnica, from which one can make medicines and creams.

If you are interested in the benefits of plants and cosmetics, you can find near the area the Melvita factory, manufacturer of organic beauty products, the visit can be done in English.
